The Body Type and the Wedding Dress: Tips from Slanovskiy

When selecting your wedding dress, it's crucial to consider your body type as picking the right silhouette can highlight your assets and conceal any imperfections. There are five main body types to consider: Hourglass, Triangle/Pear, Rounded/Apple, Rectangle, and Inverted Triangle. Read on to find out which dress is most suitable for your body type.

Hourglass Type

The Hourglass body type is the most balanced and proportionate with a thin waistline and equally sized chest and hips. Almost any wedding gown will look brilliant on this body type, but fitted or straight-cut gowns are highly recommended to accentuate the elegant waistline and delicate collarbones. We recommend avoiding gowns with ruffles and an abundance of lace.

Triangle/Pear Type

This body type has narrow shoulders and wider hips. To balance out the silhouette, opt for dresses that make the hips look narrower and add volume to the chest. A-line dresses with waist inserts or horizontal elements can help achieve this, as well as boat necklines or puffed sleeves that make the upper body appear wider. It's best to avoid mermaid gowns and voluminous skirts that will make the hips appear larger.

Rounded/Apple Type

This body type is indicated by wide hips, ample breasts, and slender legs. To highlight the seductive body curves, dresses with a V-shaped neckline, high waistline, thick corset, or lush skirt are recommended. Avoid horizontal patterns and lines, drapery, and shiny fabrics as they can make you look fuller. An Empire-style dress is an excellent choice.

Rectangle Type

The Rectangle body type lacks defined curves, with the chest depth, waist measurement, and hip-width being the same. To make a soft silhouette, select an A-line dress or a traditional voluminous gown. Gowns with a clear-cut waistline, a lush skirt, or a vividly decorated neckline are also advised. Avoid mermaid or straight-cut gowns and dresses with padded shoulders.

Inverted Triangle Type

This body type has broad shoulders, narrow hips, and long slender legs. To balance the silhouette, concentrate on the hips by selecting dresses with a lush skirt, a V-shaped neckline, a clear-cut waistline, a cut at the back, or a vent. Avoid off-the-shoulder gowns, voluminous sleeves, and dresses with a heavily decorated neckline.
